Community Development Worker LGBT Mental Wellbeing

Yorkshire MESMAC is a group of independent community based sexual health and social wellbeing services that are committed to developing and delivering services that are responsive to the needs of our communities.

We are seeking to appoint the following: Community Development Worker LGBT Mental Wellbeing (Bradford - 32 hrs)

Men’s TOTAL Health aims to help GBT+ young men increase their emotional resilience and self-esteem enabling them to make positive beneficial changes to both their physical and mental wellbeing. Through working with and supporting ‘buddies’ working within the sport, leisure and fitness fields, the project will address both real and perceived barriers GBT+ young men face in order to improve their physical wellbeing by accessing and taking part in a range of sporting/fitness activities.

The Living Well project aims to reduce mental health inequalities which can be faced by the LGBT+ community by:

  • Providing specific support to these marginalised groups in a variety of settings including; groups/online/one to one’s/therapeutic interventions
  • Appropriate information giving and signposting for LGBT+ community members to other agencies/support services
  • Raising awareness of issues facing this community amongst young people in education settings
  • Raising awareness of issues facing this community amongst health care professionals through training
  • Maintaining a strong online presence through social media to promote positive messages and support services and reduce isolation
  • Equipping organisations/schools/colleges with appropriate resources
  • Attending relevant meetings to advocate for LGBT+ community members

Overall Aim:

  • Improve the mental wellbeing of LGBT people in Bradford (Living Well project)
  • Improve the mental wellbeing of Gay, Bisexual & Trans plus (GBT+) young men (16 – 20 yrs old) in Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield (Men’s Total Health Project)

Prime Objectives:

  • Recruit to and deliver therapeutic self-awareness group interventions to GBT+ young men in Bradford
  • Improve the mental wellbeing of LGBT+ people/GBT+ young men by developing opportunities to participate in
    • Mental health campaigns
    • exercise and team sports
  • Build community capacity & resilience through peer mentors.
  • Co - develop a Sports buddying system to overcome barriers to sports groups/activities faced by GBT+ young men
  • Work with
    • local sports groups to increase accessibility for GBT+ young men
    • local health organisations to increase accessibility for LGBT+ people
  • To develop a training programme aimed at a variety of professionals & stakeholders to ensure their:
    • sports services are accessible, appropriate and acceptable to GBT+ young men
    • health services are accessible, appropriate and acceptable to LGBT+ people

Salary: NJC scale 6 (points 26- 28) starting at £23,866 per annum pro rata for 32 hours per week for a fixed term contract until 31st March 2021 + 5% workplace pension and membership of Simply Health (on completion of probationary period). Salary is reviewed annually. This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS with barred lists check.
